Recruiting rankings are BS - 2016 VA top recruits
I'm tired of people talking about the importance of recruiting when recruiting rankings cannot be relied upon. So many recruits will leave programs due to academics, injuries, violation of team rules and other reasons. I am revisiting the TSL 2016 top VA high school recruits to show that high school recruiting rankings do not accurately predict sucess at the next level. I do believe the rankings accurately reflect each player's high school accomplishments. It is hard to predict how a player will develop and whether they will avoid potential academic, social. legal and medical problems.
1. Levonta Taylor - He finished his career at FSU and didn't do much on the field. Played in the spring league but didn't play in NFL. Overrated
2. Scott Bracey - played at Duke and is now playing at JMU. Put up some decent numbers but not dominant. overrated
3. Clark Yarbrough - Signed with Stanford but had to give up football due to concussions. Career stopped due to medical issues
4. Josh Ball - Kicked out of FSU for dating violence and played a couple of years at Marshall. Talented guy drafted by Dallas Cowboys.
5. Wayne Davis - Transferred out of OSU and ended up at JMU. He is still playing but doesn't seem to be that great. Overrated
6. Kyree Campbell - Played at Florida for four years. Didn't make it to NFL but had a solid college career.
7. Jalen Elliott - Good career at Notre Dame. Currently playing in NFL
8. Patrice Rene - Finished eligibiity at UNC and now playing at Rutgers. Overrated
9. Mark Birmingham - Finished career at Duke without doing much. Overrated
10. Jaquan Yulee - Broke his neck so medical issues derailed his career. Tragically died in car crash b4 final season of eligibility
11. Jay Jay McCargo - Medical retirement ended his college career.
12. Reggie Floyd - Started at Tech but didn't seem to improve. I thought he was going to be an All-American as a frosh/soph.
13. Eric Kumah - Solid player who transferred to a bad ODU team before the QB decided to go to seminary school.
14. Chase Pine - Still playing at Pittsburgh. Seems to be solid but not putting up big numbers.
15. Phillip Patterson - Played three years at Tech and didn't do much. overrated
I noticed a few names on the list that were underrated and I'm sure I missed a few notable names. Joe Reed of UVA was ranked 19 and I would put him in the top 5. Sulaiman Kamara of Wake Forest was rated number 23 but I'd rate him higher because he's HUGE. Patrick Jones of Pittsburgh was underrated at 35 since he was an All-American and third round NFL pick. Greg Dortch of Wake Forest was underrated at 37 based on his college production and he is still bouncing around the NFL on practice squads.
My overall point is to say that recruiting is inaccurate and can probably only be evaluated five or six years later. It might even be premature to make a final judgment on some of these players since they were granted an extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic. I attached a link below to the TSL top 40 list.
